Most dog owners take their dogs to a professional groomer as it’s difficult to care for them at home. But you can learn how to do that by asking for advice from your vet and practising a few times. There are some simple tricks and tips on how to perform grooming sessions in the comfort of your own home. Use Right Tools
Dog grooming equipment is of different sizes and for different types and sizes of dogs. So pick the right tool that suits your dog. Here are some examples:
• Slicker brush – These are thin flat pads with widely spaced pins. Use them on dogs with short fur and for removing mats and tangles
• Pin brush – These are used for brushing out the undercoat of long-haired dogs.
• Rubber brush – These are soft rubber nubs attached to a strong central pin. These are used for brushing the hair of short-haired dogs. • Bristle brush – These are soft rubber nubs attached to a strong central pin. These are used for brushing the hair of short-haired dogs.
• Currycomb – It is a soft-bristled brush with a shape that is ideal for removing tangles and mats. • Scissors – You need one pair of small scissors for trimming the hair around the paws, face, ears and tail and on long-haired dogs. You will also need one pair of large dog scissors for trimming the coat on short-haired dogs. Along with these basic tools, you should also have other accessories like nail clippers, shampoo with conditioner, grooming wipes, cotton swabs, spray bottles etc...
Nail trimming is one of the basic grooming tasks for puppies as well as adult dogs. Using scissors, you can trim the hair over the nail if your dog is afraid of the clippers, and cut the front nails while he is asleep. Remember to trim only the tips of the nails
. If you trim the edges, it’ll hurt your pet. Use a towel or cloth to grip the paw and cut it straight across. For the rear nails, hold the paw firmly and move fast. But make sure you don’t cut the quick. Cutting the quick will result in bleeding and pain.
If it bleeds, press a cotton ball into the cut for five to ten minutes to stop the bleeding. The nail is made up of a soft part called the quick, and it is right under the skin. If you don’t cut straight across, the clippers will hit the quick and snip it.
